IELTS in the UAE 2027 — Registration, Scores and What the Format Change Means
The IELTS partners (British Council, IDP and Cambridge) have announced a full transition to computer-delivered testing from mid-2026, with timelines varying by market. Details in the format section.
Why IELTS Matters More in the UAE Now
Since the EmSAT was discontinued, UAE universities rely on IELTS or TOEFL as the two recognised routes for proving English proficiency. The requirement was never removed — the pathway simply narrowed to these two.
Academic or General Training?
| Your goal | Version |
|---|---|
| University admission (any level) | Academic |
| Scholarship or government sponsorship | Academic |
| Professional licensing | Academic in most cases |
| Immigration (Canada, Australia) | General Training |
Test Structure
| Section | Duration | Questions |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | ~30 minutes | 40 |
| Reading | 60 minutes | 40 |
| Writing | 60 minutes | 2 tasks |
| Speaking | 11-14 minutes | 3 parts |
How your overall band is calculated
The overall band is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half band.
| Section | Band |
|---|---|
| Listening | 7.0 |
| Reading | 6.5 |
| Writing | 5.5 |
| Speaking | 6.5 |
| Average | 25.5 ÷ 4 = 6.375 → 6.5 |
Scores Required by UAE Universities
| University | Direct entry | Conditional |
|---|---|---|
| NYU Abu Dhabi | 7.0+ | — |
| MBZUAI (postgraduate) | 7.0 | — |
| Khalifa University | 6.5 | Below → foundation |
| American University of Sharjah | 6.5 | 6.0 |
| MBRU (Medicine) | 6.5 | — |
| American University in Dubai | 6.0 | 5.5 |
| UAEU | ~6.0 | 5.0-5.5 |
| Zayed University | ~6.0 | 5.0 |
| University of Sharjah | 5.5-6.0 | 5.0 |
| Heriot-Watt / RIT / UOWD Dubai | 6.0 | 5.5 |
Indicative figures — requirements vary by faculty and change annually. Verify with your university.
Watch the per-skill minimum
Many universities require that no individual band falls below a set floor — not just the overall. An overall 6.5 with Writing at 5.5 can still be rejected or diverted to a conditional pathway. Writing is the band that most often fails Arabic-speaking candidates.
The Move to Computer-Delivered Testing
The IELTS partners have announced a full transition to computer delivery from mid-2026, following evidence of higher satisfaction among candidates who chose the computer format — driven by faster results, greater date flexibility, and access to One Skill Retake.
What changes — and what does not
| Element | Status |
|---|---|
| Test structure and question types | ✅ Unchanged |
| Band scoring (1-9) | ✅ Unchanged |
| Duration (~2h45m) | ✅ Unchanged |
| Global recognition | ✅ Unchanged |
| Certificate validity (2 years) | ✅ Unchanged |
| Listening and Reading | 🔄 On screen at all centres |
| Speaking | ✅ Remains a face-to-face interview |
| Writing | 🔄 On screen — with a "Writing on Paper" option at selected locations |
| Existing paper results | ✅ Valid for the usual two years |
What to do about it
- Practise on screen now — training with printed papers prepares you for a format that is disappearing
- Improve your typing speed — it directly affects Writing
- Get used to reading from a screen — cognitively different from paper
- Check your centre — timelines differ by market
One Skill Retake
This feature lets you retake a single section rather than the whole test — and it continues under the new computer-delivered model.
Why it changes the maths
Because your overall band is an average, lifting one section from 5.5 to 7.0 raises your overall by roughly 0.4 band — potentially the difference between a conditional offer and direct entry, at a fraction of the cost and time of a full retake.
| Your situation | Decision |
|---|---|
| Three solid bands, one dragging the average | ✅ One Skill Retake |
| All sections below target | ❌ Retake the full test |
| 0.5 short because of a single section | ✅ One Skill Retake |
⚠️ Your retake must match the format of your original test — candidates who chose Writing on Paper retake in that same format.

Preparation Timeline
| Current level | Target | Realistic timeline |
|---|---|---|
| 5.0 | 6.0 | 10-14 weeks |
| 5.5 | 6.5 | 10-14 weeks |
| 6.0 | 7.0 | 10-16 weeks |
| Any level | +0.5 band | 6-8 weeks |
What you cannot prepare alone
Listening and Reading respond partly to self-study. Writing and Speaking do not — you cannot see your own errors or judge whether your essay structure meets examiner criteria. Together they are half your score.
FAQ
Is the paper test still available?
It is being phased out from mid-2026, with timing varying by market. Practise on computer regardless.
Does computer delivery affect my score?
No — research confirms scores are comparable across formats, and the structure and assessment are identical.
Is Speaking still face-to-face?
Yes — Speaking remains a live interview with an examiner.
How long is my certificate valid?
Two years from the test date.
IELTS or TOEFL for UAE universities?
Both are accepted. Choose IELTS if you are stronger in live conversation; choose TOEFL for a shorter, fully computer-based test with no interviewer.
